The Opinel No. 12 Explore 002454 is the perfect choice for outdoor enthusiasts and fans of bushcraft and survival activities. This knife has a short and sturdy stainless-steel blade, a durable and comfortable polymer handle, and comes with handy extras such as a cutting hook, whistle and tick tool. These are cleverly built into the back of the handle.
How do you use the Opinel No. 12 Explore?
The Opinel No. 12 Explore is a versatile and cleverly designed knife. The steel part at the end of the handle acts as a cutting hook, held in place by the orange tick remover tool. In the standard position, the cutting hook prevents the knife from slipping out of your hand during use. The recess in the cutting hook allows you to hang the knife safely on a branch or attach it to your backpack with a carabiner. By pushing the tick remover tool out of the handle a bit, you can slide the cutting hook outwards, revealing the cutting part. If you slide the tick tool completely out of the handle, you can use it to remove ticks.
You open this knife using the ‘nail nick’, a small groove in the blade that proves a little more grip to bring out the knife with two hands. The Virobloc has been chosen as the locking mechanism. This is a lock developed by Opinel that some people also call a ‘ring lock’. The Virobloc holds the knife in place both when opened and closed. You turn the ring to release the blade and then turn it back to keep the blade in place.
Blade made of Sandvik 12C27 steel
The blade is made of Sandvik 12C27 steel, a corrosion-resistant steel from Sweden that was specially developed for knives. It is a steel grade that strikes the perfect balance between toughness, ease of sharpening, corrosion resistance and sharpness retention.
This knife has a convex grind. This is a special sharpening method where the side of the blade continues in one convex curve to a razor-sharp edge. This sharpening method is often applied by hand in the factory. The great advantage of a convex grind is that it offers the perfect balance between minimal cutting resistance and optimum strength of the edge. You maintain a convex edge by stropping it.
The blade of this knife is enhanced with a ‘satin finish’. This is a chic and tasteful finish that is very popular.
Polyamide handle
The handle of this Opinel is made from polyamide, a strong plastic. For knife handles, it is often reinforced with fibres, like glass fibres, for additional strength.
