The Rough Ryder Arctic Fox Cotton Sampler RR2546 is a stylish pocket knife with a sleek design. This knife from the Arctic Fox collection is made to be used, but its design is stunning too! The most striking feature of the Arctic Fox is the black symbol, neatly incorporated into the white micarta handle with shiny bolsters of nickel silver.



You open the Rough Ryder with two hands. To make this easier, there’s a nail nick which gives you a little extra grip using your fingernail. This pocket knife is not equipped with a full lock, only with a slipjoint mechanism. This provides some resistance to prevent the knife from snapping shut during normal use. However, if you press on the spine of the blade, the knife will shut.



Blade made of 440A steel
The blade of this Rough Ryder is made of 440A. This is a stainless steel that is easy to sharpen, retains its sharpness pretty well and is very affordable. It might not be anything to write home about, but it’s good quality.



The blade of this knife is enhanced with a ‘satin finish’. This is a chic and tasteful finish that is very popular.



Micarta handle

The handle of this Rough Ryder Arctic Fox is made of micarta and measures 10.5 cm in length. Micarta is a great material for pocket knife handles. This material is grippy, relatively lightweight and it looks very cool. It is composed of fabric fibres and synthetic resin. The resulting layers often even make micarta look a bit like wood. However, it is a very stable and strong material.



Traditional: the Cotton Sampler pattern
The Cotton Sampler pattern knife stands out due to its appearance, though its history is rather unclear. The pattern predates the name and closely resembles old gardening and sailor’s knives. According to some, the tall blade was used to cut into a bale of cotton and scoop out a sample, almost like a spoon. The flat section would then be used to rub the fibres in order to assess their quality. Is that really true? No one knows for certain. It’s likely that this explanation was thought up later to suit a knife that already existed, which in turn influenced how the design developed.

There are two variants: one with a handle that curves backwards and a robust, straight blade; and one with a handle that curves forwards and a distinctive blade with a long, unsharpened ricasso. These days, ‘Cotton Sampler’ usually refers only to the latter.
