The Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight CPM SPY27 C123PCBL Blue FRN is a valuable addition to the already extended Spyderco Sage collection. For this collection Spyderco always uses the same design. The difference, however, is that for each model a different locking mechanism, or type of material is used. In this case, it is a steel that is different, the standard CPM S30V has given way to CPM SPY27 steel.
The Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight CPM SPY27 C123PCBL Cobalt Blue FRN pocket knife is a cool EDC knife in the colour blue. With its blade length of 7.7 cm, this knife is suitable for daily cutting tasks. For example, opening boxes, peeling an apple, the odd job around the house: this pocket knife can do it all.
Opening the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight CPM SPY27 C123PCBL Cobalt Blue FRN pocket knife with one hand is very easy thanks to the thumb hole. Once opened, the sturdy Compression Lock ensures that the blade is locked and won’t accidentally close during use. The Compression Lock is an invention by Sal Glesser and his son Eric Glesser ofSpyderco. In terms of operation, it’s kind of like a reverse liner lock. However, in practice, the Compression Lock is much stronger. This is because the lock wedges laterally between the blade tang and the stop pin, rather than just making contact with the blade. What’s more, a Compression Lock has a very high ‘fidget factor’.
Blade of CPM SPY27 steel
This Spyderco features a blade made of CPM SPY27 steel. This unique steel grade was developed in collaboration with Spyderco to meet their specific needs. This steel is very similar to CPM S30V and CPM S35VN, with similar sharpness retention and toughness. SPY27 will be slightly easier to sharpen, though, thanks to an addition of cobalt and slightly lower levels of carbon and vanadium.
The blade of this knife is enhanced with a ‘satin finish’. This is a chic and tasteful finish that is very popular.
Handle made of FRN
The handle of the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight CPM SPY27 C123PCBL Cobalt Blue FRN pocket knife is made of FRN and measures 10.7 cm in length. FRN stands for Fibre-Reinforced Nylon. That makes it a type of plastic made from nylon, and reinforced with glass fibres for additional strength and durability. FRN is also known as GFN.
Designer Sal Glesser
Sal Glesser is the legendary founder of Spyderco. Together with his wife Gail, he founded this iconic knife brand. He is the inventor of the round thumb hole and many more innovations. Many of Spyderco’s standard models were designed by Sal himself. Read more about Sal Glesser here.
Spyderco: great pioneer in the world of knives
Spyderco is one of the world’s leading knife companies. Many innovations were made by this brand, think of the pocket clip, the thumb hole, a large range of locking mechanisms, but also steel types. It’s safe to say the knife world would have looked very different indeed without Spyderco.
Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. Interestingly, they didn’t start out selling knives. The first product Sal and Gail sold was a soldering tool, which they sold travelling around markets. Then came a sharpening system, causing Sal to start experimenting with pocket knives. In his quest for a knife that was easier to open with one hand, he came up with the idea for a round thumb hole while experimenting. A stroke of pure genius.
Today, the next generation is at the helm of Spyderco. Eric Glesser, the son of Sal and Gail, works hard every day to further establish Spyderco as a leading knife brand.
